Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week 2015
I know, right? We’ll have to think of a way to punish her later. Right now though, let’s tell our readers why this week is so important!
Great idea! Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week was started in 2009 by Petfinder.com to celebrate pets that may have a hard time getting adopted. There are lots of different types of pets that are considered to be “less adoptable” – seniors pets, pets with special needs, black cats or dogs, misunderstood dog breeds, pets with disabilities, or those with behavioral issues. Sassy and I here are both special needs pets and would be considered “less-adoptable.” We are very blessed to have been adopted, as there are many less-adoptable pets out there who haven’t been adopted yet.
That’s right. According to a survey conducted by Petfinder, 99% of rescue groups and shelters have taken in less-adoptable pets. However, many of these pets wait four times longer to get adopted than the average adoptable pet; some even wait for years. I was rescued from a life on the streets by my mom and dad, and when they took me to the vet after bringing me into their family, I tested positive for FIV. Though I have a virus similar to HIV in humans, I can actually live a normal, healthy, and happy life. Many people do not understand this, so unfortunately, FIV+ kitties are often overlooked at shelters and rescues.
I have a neurological disorder called cerebellar hypoplasia. It makes me wobbly and uncoordinated, but like Sassy, I can live a normal, healthy, and happy life. In fact, my mom and dad say that I am the happiest kitty they’ve ever met. Before they adopted me though, I was overlooked by many at the rescue I was with. I watched all of the other kittens around me get adopted, while everyone kept asking, “What’s wrong with that one?” There’s really nothing wrong with me. I’m just different!
Sophie, you said that purrfectly. There ISN’T anything wrong with us, or any of the other less-adoptable pets out there. We are just different – or “specially featured” as you like to say, Sophie. Whether blind, three-legged, old, diabetic, scared, FIV+, or wobbly, we are all just as capable of loving as any other pet. We may be “less-adoptable,” but we certainly aren’t less-lovable.
If you are thinking about adopting an animal into your family, we encourage you to consider adopting one of us less-adoptables. It could be one of the best things you ever do!

You two kitties are so awesome – humans are stupid who won’t consider adopting so-called “less-adoptable” kitties.

Oh, I just love this post! I’m so glad your mom and dad rescued you both! You’re both such lovely gals and great testimonies for adopting “less adoptable.”
May I use that PetFinder graphic in my side bar? I just love it!

This is an excellent post. We didn’t know this was Adopt a less Adoptable Pet Week. We don’t seem to be able to keep up with all the special days and weeks. It does seem with so many pet bloggers that we manage to get all the important dates covered. We like your term, special featured. We are sending oodles of love and hugs from all of us to all of you. Astrid sends her Sampy kisses stretching to the moon and back. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

We don’t think there are any less adoptable pets. But we know not everybuddy thinks like we do. Me and Zoey would be considered less adoptables. We’re grateful to have such a wonderful home. Ernie

This is all so true. The less adoptable pets are usually the ones that will love you the most. It is so rewarding to take in a cat or a dog that truly needs some help. Great post.
Ellen Pilch says
Great post. All cats are loveable if given time and deserve forever homes.

I thing the “less adoptable” pets are often the most interesting. Whatever their special need is, it makes their human learn something about how to care for them and often makes the human-animal bond stronger.

Thanks for such a great post! Mommy did forget to post about this week and we’re not very happy with her. We sponsor a special needs kitty every month and we should have posted! Sophie, Mommy has met many kitties with CH and says they are no different that any other kitty. Wobbly makes them cuter!

What a great reminder! And I’ll vouch for the joy that comes with opening your home to an overlooked cat. I’m about to celebrate my Troy’s 6-month gotcha day! He languished in the shelter b/c he is old, thin, and all black. To other adopters, he was invisible. To me, he is irreplaceable.

It always makes me sad when an animal is deemed less adoptable. Every pet deserves to be loved. Thanks for sharing.

The two of you are purrrfect examples of great kitties that just have a few different challenges in life. I love that you are working to help change the stigma! We all have challenges – your challenges have big fancy names. You are wonderful and I’m so glad that your humans could see that right from the start.
