Endangered Species Day 2015

May 14, 2015 18 Comments

Endangered Species Day 2015

Unfortunately, endangerment is something that many species are facing today across the globe. Several factors contribute to species endangerment, including destruction of habitat, pollution, hunting/fishing, and introduction of exotic species. Notice any similarities amongst those reasons? They are all ways that humans are contributing to the problem.

In honor of Endangered Species Day, I would like to highlight several of the beautiful wild cats around the world whose populations unfortunately continue to decline.

How We Can Help

    • Donate to conservation efforts such as the World Wildlife Fund or International Society for Endangered Cats.
    • Support government bills relating to wildlife conservation, such as the 2008 Lacey Act Amendments which prohibit illegal timber or timber products from entering the US, or the Wildlife Tracking Enforcement Act of 2015 which raises the penalties for trafficking in endangered species and directs funds to protect endangered species. You can find a list of other bills to support and petitions to sign here on the WWF Take Action page.
    • Take action in your own neighborhood by conserving water and power, recycling, and minimizing the use of products that are harmful to the environment.

Thank you so much for bringing attention to this important subject. I believe too many people don’t realize the disastrous happening around the globe. Humans usually think more about their pocketbooks and their ego, than about these poor animals.

It is important to remind people that small actions, like simply recycling, can make a big difference in wildlife conservation! Thanks for the reminder. We are big on reusing and recycling here at the cottage. Let’s hope these big cats continue to share the earth with us for a long time to come.
