We mentioned in our last post that we recently purchased two food puzzles for the kitties. Kylo Ren and Gryphon especially require a good bit of stimulation and exercise to keep them happy, so I decided to give food puzzles a try. It was definitely the right move!
While not all of the kitties get into the food puzzles, Kylo and Gryphon really enjoy them. With a couple exceptions, most of the others do too.
I decided to put everyone to the test and see who is the best food puzzle solver. I had my suspicions on who would come out on top, but I was curious how things would actually play out.
To test, I put the cats up in our bedroom, filled the treat puzzle, and let out one cat at a time. I then timed each cat to see how long it took them to solve the puzzle.
Note: The food puzzle we used for the test has 9 possible treats, and is rated as a “difficult” puzzle. If you’re interested in purchasing this same food puzzle for your kitties (or dog), click here.

Sophie
I pretty much knew how things were going to go with Sophie. She is not food motivated at all, and she has little interest in anything besides snuggles, STICK!, and her daddy. And though we love Sophie dearly, she is not the brightest crayon in the box.
As expected, when I put the food puzzle out for her, she just stared at it. I tried to show her how it works and that there were treats inside, but that just piqued her interest in the spinning and moving parts. She played with those for a minute or two, and then walked away.

Raddy
Raddy shows interest in the puzzle if I get it out as a group activity. He will work on it with Kylo and seems to enjoy it. However, when isolated to work on the puzzle by himself, he gets nervous and just wants to go back to the bedroom with the other cats. If given the puzzle in the bedroom by himself, he gets nervous about the bedroom door being closed and just wants out.
Raddy is a quirky, skittish boy, most comfortable in his “pack.” I guess we will never know how quickly Raddy could solve the puzzle on his own…

Sassy
Sassy worked on the puzzle for 6 minutes, solved 2 out of 9 treats, and then quit. Though given the opportunity and encouragement, she did not return to the puzzle.

Kylo Ren
Kylo worked on the puzzle for 9 minutes, solved 5 out of 9 treats, and then got bored and quit. I know he is capable of solving the puzzle because he was the first of the crew to do so when we first got it. I guess he’s “above it” now. haha.

Sampson
Sampson worked on the puzzle for 15 minutes, solved 6 out of 9 treats, and then quit. Though given the opportunity and encouragement, he did not return to the puzzle.

Delilah
Delilah worked on the puzzle for 39 minutes straight. She then “took a break” with a single treat remaining. After 30 minutes went by, she jumped off her favorite kitchen chair spot and got the remaining treat in just 30 seconds. Though it took her a while to solve, she did it!

Gryphon
Gryphon solved the puzzle completely in 13 minutes.

The winner of this first round of Food Puzzle Wars is GRYPHON!
We will have more rounds with other food puzzles, so this will become a regular thing I think. If you’re interested in joining the fun, let us know!
Who did you think would win?
That was a fun game/contest!!
You go Gryphon!!
What a fun competition, and paws up to Gryphon! I will confess, I am really bad at treat puzzles. I’d rather sit and ring a bell and do high fives for treats.
That looks like a challenging and fun one, our Simon is good at those things!
It is interesting to see which kitties put more effort into getting the treats.
Man, I’m too old to be working for my treats that hard. 😉 ~Ernie
What a fun puzzle. We only have one food motivated cat but may get this as it looks like a lot of fun
Good job, Gryphon and Delilah!
This was such a fun way to review a food puzzle! I might have to treat my cats to a food puzzle war.
