One of the coolest features of our new house is the large unfinished basement. We will make this into our music studio eventually, but on moving day, the basement served as a holding cell for the kitties. We figured they would be safest in the basement, as there would be lots of commotion, coming in and out of doors, bringing in boxes and furniture upstairs, and down in the basement there wouldn’t be a risk of them slipping outside. Before setting the cats up in the basement, we of course made sure there was nothing unsafe and no ways to get outside. We thought we had checked out every hiding spot as well. Everything looked good and safe, the kitties went in the basement, and we went to work. After about 45 minutes, I went downstairs to check on them and make sure everything was okay.
Delilah – check! Caster – check! Sophie – check! (Sassy was secluded in one of the upstairs bedrooms – check!) Sampson…. Sampson?! SAMPSON?!?
Keep in mind – the basement is just a large unfinished room with nothing in it but the cats and some of their things. Nowhere to hide… nowhere to go… yet, there was no sign of Sampy. I got some cat treats, I sang his song, I had Bobby, my mom, and mother-in-law all down there staring at this large empty room searching for him. Not a sight, not a sound. Nothing. We were all flummoxed.
He had managed the impossible. He had found a way outside. He had somehow gotten into the duct work and were were going to have to take the house apart to find him. My Sampy was gone! And I was falling apart.
And my mom — the Cat-Finding Detective.
It was a while before Sampson came out. He finally moseyed out on top of the duct work, and I was able to stand on a chair so I could reach him and pull him down. He is now doing well, and everyone is adjusting just fine to their new home. They have a lot more space, and since we own the home, we will eventually be adding cool cat features like cat shelves and window perches and maybe even a catio.
I think we will all be very happy here. π

There’s always one cat that will find the nearly-impossible-to-find spot! It’s like a cat Murphy’s Law.

Mom could have warned you about that one. Her friend had a cat who loved to hide in the ceiling and walk along the duct work in their unfinished basement. Astrid is so happy Sampy is safe and well. Guess he won’t be going in the basement again anytime soon. Astrid will be writing Sampy soon about her birthday gifts. Concats on the new home. Sending much love to cats and humans and Astrid is sending Sampson 23456789986543456984689876544567875435663234523456789876543235678765478765578854 kisses.
