I know I’ve mentioned several times in other posts about how there is no cure for cerebellar hypoplasia. While this is true, there are things you can do to help strengthen your CH kitty’s muscles, which in turn develops her coordination and overall abilities. I’ve witnessed this first-hand with Sophie.
When we first adopted her, she couldn’t jump at all. Flash forward five years, and she is jumping, running, climbing, you name it. Technically speaking, her condition hasn’t and won’t ever “get better,” but her abilities have improved leaps and bounds thanks to a combination of her determined spirit and our diligence at encouraging her to exercise and play. Thankfully Sophie LOVES to play. If she had it her way, we would spend about 10 hours a day playing and the other 14 snuggling. 😀
Something we just recently started doing with Sophie is creating obstacle courses for her. I thought this would be a fun new way to help improve her jumping, turning, and overall fine motor skills. My idea is that as she progresses, I will add new things into the obstacle course to change it or make it a bit more difficult. Let me tell you, she is LOVING it. Sophie never has backed down from a challenge, after all.
Below is some footage of Sophie completing her first obstacle course. Be on the lookout for more footage in the future so you can witness her progress for yourself!
(Thanks to our sponsor, Sleepypod, for all the Mobile Pet Beds. They make great obstacles! ;D )
