Sunday Selfies with Sassy – #MyRescueStory
Did you know that June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month? To celebrate, Purina Cat Chow will subsidize a cat adoption at one of its partner shelters for $30, up to a total of $75,000, for every time someone shares their rescue story with the hashtag #MyRescueStory. Their goal is to find homes for 2,500 cats this month.
Though I wasn’t a shelter cat, I do have a rescue story. Many of you may have heard it before, but I am going to share a shortened version here again for anyone who hasn’t heard it and to help Purina with their admirable goal.
My name is Sassy, and I used to be a stray kitty. I lived outside at Mom and Dad’s old apartment building. One day I decided to approach them. I mewed and rubbed on their legs, and it worked! I won them over, and they started feeding me. I took up residence on their back porch, and they continued to feed me every day. I tried to sneak inside their apartment several times, but they told me that I couldn’t come in because of their other kitties. This went on for a few weeks. After putting up flyers and posting my photo on Facebook in an attempt to find any family that I might have had, and getting no response, they decided to take me in. They just said that I had to go to the vet to get spayed, vaccinated, and tested first.
It was there that they discovered that I had already been spayed and that I am FIV+. This was a big shock – they had no idea what FIV was, and unfortunately the vet gave them all kinds of bad information. Thankfully, they didn’t let that dissuade them from rescuing me. My mom dedicated herself to doing her own research on FIV rather than listening to the vet. In all of her reading and researching, she discovered that FIV isn’t really that big of a deal and that I can still live an otherwise healthy and normal life.
I remember the first day that I got to go inside Mom and Dad’s apartment. It was so nice and warm and cozy. I even got my own room! I still have my own room actually. Since we’ve moved to a house, it’s more of a suite than a room though. I have my own suite not because I’m FIV+, but because I am aggressive towards the other cats. After living out on the streets and having to defend myself from other kitties, I don’t trust that my brothers and sisters aren’t going to hurt me. My mom and dad have done a lot to make me more comfortable and trusting though. After a lot of work, I’ve learned to trust my sister Sophie… somewhat. I let her come into my suite sometimes, but we are always supervised. I think that one day we may be able to be furiends.
This is me on Mom & Dad’s back porch before they officially rescued me. I loved to sleep in this flower pot, so Mom put a towel over it so I wouldn’t be sleeping in the dirt. She also put a collar and ID tag on me in case I wandered “home” – that way, my family would see it and call to say that I belonged to them. Nobody ever called though.
I am one of the luckiest kitties in the world to have been rescued and blessed with a loving, furever home. There are many kitties out there still looking. I hope that you will consider giving a kitty their very own rescue story. Maybe even another FIV+ kitty like me. You can visit your local rescue or animal shelter to find the purrfect furry companion to welcome into your family. I promise you won’t regret it!
Don’t forget to help Purina find furever homes for 2,500 cats by sharing your rescue story. All you have to do is use the hashtag #MyRescueStory. It couldn’t be easier!

Sassy, we knew your story, but we are sure others were new to it It is very much the same as how our angel brofur Madison came to live with our humans. He had to hang out the porch for about six months, however! Good to let folks know about the Purina challenge as well. Astrid is sending the love of her life, Sampy, a bajillion kisses and purrs. We all send love and hugs to everyone at your house. Thank you for being our best friends and faithful supporters of our blog hop. Hi Sassy! I love this story. All of our cats and dogs over the years were originally strays (and wandered into our yard like you) or were adopted from the shelter. I loved your story and am so happy you have an inside home now. We are going to participate in this event as well – hopefully tomorrow, but maybe Friday.

Sassy, your selfie is beautiful! You have a wonderful rescue story. Thank goodness you came to your mom and dad who didn’t take the vet’s word for FIV. It’s so sad to think of other kitties that are FIV+ and vets giving misinformation. So happy for you being in your loving forever home!

Sassy, we’re glad your peeps rescued you and now you have a furever home. You’re kinda like our Zoey, though she’s not FIV+…she trusts very few people and doesn’t like other cats much. We think she’s just scared most of the time. You have very pretty green eyes. 🙂
