Caturday Art: Jack & Maggie

July 12, 2014 13 Comments

For today’s Caturday Art blog hop, I am featuring some new faces: Jack and Maggie! Don’t get too excited – these aren’t new family additions for me. These two are actually two of the originals! They are two of my childhood pets. I am visiting my mom and stepdad for the weekend and thought it would be neat to share about Jack and Maggie while I’m here.

Growing up, we had lots of pets! At one point, we had three cats and three dogs (Jack and Maggie included). Today, it’s just these two.

Jack, as an oil painting

We adopted Jack when I was 10. He was Cat #3, joining Madeline and Phoebe. Jack is one of the sweetest and gentlest cats. He is also very passive, so he often got overshadowed by Madeline and Phoebe, who had stronger and more assertive personalities. Since Maddy and Phoebe have crossed over the rainbow bridge, Jack has really come out of his shell. Though he is still very timid, he now has the run of the house. He is also a pretty big cat – you can hear him coming down the hallway, he has such heavy steps. It sounds like an elephant is coming your way! In contrast, he has the highest and littlest squeak for a meow. It is so cute. Though Jack is 15, you would never know it. He still runs and plays like a kitten. In this picture, Jack is under my mom and stepdad’s bed. In the top right corner, you can see a little bit of the box spring liner hanging down – Jack has made a giant hole in the bottom of the box spring, and he gets inside of it. That is his go-to hang out spot. So silly!

Maggie, black and white

This is Maggie! She was adopted when I was 17, being the last furry family addition to be made. She is nothing but a big ball of love. She would love nothing more than to spend the day going on walks, and then coming home and cuddling. She and I share a special bond – whenever I come to visit, my mom always tells Maggie, “Emily’s coming home!” and she waits at the front window, whimpering and crying until I get there. As soon as I walk in the door, she is all over me, and she continues to stay glued to my side until it’s time for me to leave. I love it.

One of the things I look forward to most about coming home to visit is getting to sleep in my old bed with my two furry companions. They fight over who gets to sleep with me, though they both end up winning. Jack and Maggie tolerate each other, but they are certainly not friends. Maggie is too jealous and doesn’t like to share her people. If she gets in bed with me first, as soon as Jack even comes in the room, she gets upset and leaves. She just can’t take it. Jack knows it too, and he purposefully taunts her. The dynamic between them is just too funny. Anyway, Jack usually temporarily wins the bed battle by just simply walking in the room, but Maggie’s desire to be with me eventually wins out over her jealousy, and she comes back and jumps in the bed with me too. And I am perfectly content with my little slice of heaven.

That must be so nice to be able to visit your childhood pets! Since our mom remembers when the cave paintings were new, hers have all passed on.

They are both beautiful pets. Mom said it is a wonderful thing to grow up with pets. That is so sweet the relationship you have with them even after all the time apart. They look great for both their ages.
