Tomorrow is the 4th anniversary of the day we added Cat #5 to the family — Caster! It’s hard to believe it’s been 4 years. I remember it like it was just yesterday…
Waking up on a rainy and cold Saturday morning to a distressed cat crying outside. Putting on my coat to go investigate, afraid of what I might find. Walking into the woods behind our old apartment, following the sound of the cries, until I spotted him. As soon as he saw me, his eyes grew wide with relief. I bent down, and he jumped into my arms, wet, cold, and scared.
I carried him back to our apartment and took him back to the bedroom where Bobby was still in bed. Bobby opened his eyes, took one look at me holding this wet and muddy cat, and grumbled, “Is that a cat in your arms?!” I tentatively replied, “Yes…,” and he just turned over and went back to sleep.
Flash forward a week or so, after we tried and failed to find him a home. Though we weren’t looking to add another cat to our family for many reasons (we lived in a small apartment at the time, we already had 4 cats, we weren’t sure if we could financially support another one), we haven’t looked back since! Caster has been a wonderful addition to our family, and I can’t imagine our family without him.
He may be a big, surly, trouble-making man-cat who climbs the walls (literally), knocks full glasses off the counter, breaks into the pantry, whaps everyone who walks by, and gets immense joy out of tormenting his siblings, but we love all of those things about him. He’s one-of-a-kind!
