You Say “Can’t”, and I Will Show You I CAN | #WobblyWednesday
Cats with cerebellar hypoplasia are notorious for being terrible jumpers. In fact, many CH kitties can barely walk, let alone jump. Because of their jumping skills, or lack-thereof, you may often hear that cats with CH can’t get on the furniture/get on a cat tree/climb stairs/etc. While this is true for some, particularly those with more severe cases of CH, many are able to adapt and figure out their own way of doing these things. I have witnessed Sophie’s adaptability first hand, but I have to admit that she still surprises me.
When we first adopted Sophie, she either couldn’t or wouldn’t jump. Now she can get up on the couch, bed, cat tree, chairs…you name it. She didn’t know how to climb stairs either. In fact, when we moved into a house with stairs, we were so nervous about her being on the stairs that we put a baby gate at the bottom of them to keep her off. One week later she had figured out how to climb over the baby gate and up the stairs. When we purchased a cat tree, we weren’t sure if Sophie would be able to get on it, so we purposefully chose one that had a ramp up to the first tier. She has never once used the ramp, but she can now make it all the way up to the top of the cat tree.
How does she do all of these things if she can’t jump? She climbs. Seriously, this girl could climb Mount Everest if given the chance.
These photos were taken the day the sugar glider cage arrived. Bobby and I put it together, and the first thing Sophie did when we got it set up was climb it. No hesitations. She just went for it, and she conquered it! There is nothing this girl can’t do. She simply amazes me every day.
Never underestimate a CH kitty’s determination. Happy #WobblyWednesday!
*Please note: The sugar gliders were not in the cage when these photos and video were taken. The cats are not allowed to climb or jump on the glider cage now that the gliders are inside it.

Just this morning, during my volunteer time at the Willamette Humane Society, I met a cat with this condition. He was found as a stray, if you can believe it. I have no idea how he made it out there in the wilds! He’s up for adoption, and I’m hoping someone takes him home soon. He may be wobbly, but like your sweetie, he’s an adventurer!
