May was a busy month for the KCC Gang. Two highlights of the month were Sophie and Lucy’s birthdays! Sophie celebrated her 6th birthday on the 23rd, and Lucy celebrated her 18th birthday on the 12th. We weren’t able to do much celebrating on their actual birthdays. so we waited until this past week to take them out for a big birthday adventure!
We were planning on an afternoon on the canoe, but because of all the rain we’ve gotten recently (it’s rained every day for over 2 weeks!), the canoe put-ins at our local park have been closed due to river flooding. We settled for a hike instead. It was a good one too!
We visited our favorite local spot, Amerson River Park, and enjoyed exploring its many trails and paths. Along the way, we passed several people walking their dogs, and Sophie tried to follow them all. Thankfully all the dogs were very well behaved – only one wasn’t leashed. (Seriously, why do people feel the need to ignore leash rules?!)
Not only did Sophie enjoy all the dogs, she also enjoyed all the frogs! There were TONS of frogs (or maybe they were toads…), and they kept hopping across the trail. We didn’t let Sophie catch any of them, but she still had a great time with them (see the video for footage of Sophie frog “hunting”).
Lucy really enjoyed herself on our adventure too. At 18-years old, she still has a lot of spunk and energy. We hiked a total of almost two miles, and she didn’t stop once! She did start slowing down towards the end, so I tried to pick her up and carry her. She had none of that though! She insisted on walking the entire way herself. You go, Lucy! 🙂
With all the rain, the non-paved paths were quite muddy. Of course, Sophie and Lucy didn’t mind that. They both had baths when we got home though!
After our hike, we made a pitstop at Petsmart so Sophie could pick out a new STICK and Lucy could pick out a new bed. While we were there, we had to visit the fish and birds too. Sophie was bummed that we didn’t let her bring any fishies home with us…
The dog beds were a bit too expensive, so I made Lucy a big pallet made out of some of our old throw pillows and a blanket instead. Best idea I’ve ever had. She and the kitties have all been LOVING it!
We may not have gotten to enjoy a canoe ride down the river as originally planned, but everyone had a blast regardless. I wasn’t sure if Sophie and Lucy would last for the entire hike – it was almost 2 miles long and lasted over an hour, after all. They were both troopers though. If ever I’m feeling lazy or like I can’t do something, I will just remind myself of the time my 18-year-old dog and my neurologically handicapped cat went on a 2 mile hike…
Thanks to all our furiends for all the birthday wishes last month, and a special thanks to our furiends Pipo, Dalton, and Mom Ingrid for the beautiful birthday cards!
