Zany Zoo

July 30, 2013 2 Comments

As usual, things have been crazy here in the Hall Household! Sometimes I feel like I’m running a cat zoo. Perhaps a better way to put it is that I sometimes feel like the cat zoo is running me! HA!  I wouldn’t have it any other way though. These guys are incredible. So let me tell you about our past weekend adventures!

Okay, so Sophie LOVES to be outside. Whenever we leave the apartment, we have to watch for her because she likes to run out the door. We call her our “escape artist.” Keep in mind – Sophie has CH, so she is rather clumsy and supposedly can’t run very fast. Let me tell you, when she is determined to get outside, I swear you’ve never seen a cat run faster. Although, I can guarantee you’ve seen one run a straighter line 😉  Because she can’t run or jump very well, we are able to take her outside for play time* - she can’t get away. Her favorite activity is going out in the back yard and chasing pine cones. Bobby and I will throw them for her, and she “runs” after them. It’s ALMOST like fetch… she just doesn’t bring them back. She also likes to chase us. She really is like a dog sometimes.

All of the above is just back story for the real story here: On Sunday, we took Sophie out on a boat. Bobby’s dad just got a pontoon boat, and while we were visiting with him on Sunday, he asked if we wanted to go for a ride. We had Sophie with us though, which brought on a dilemma – leave her there or take her with? Take her, of course! Luckily I had her harness and leash in my car. I grabbed them and Sophie, and off we went! Sophie always loves car rides, and now she was going to be able to experience a boat ride. Naturally, she loved it. I’m not going to lie, she was a little bit nervous at first. She wouldn’t sit and just kept meowing, but after about 10 minutes she settled down and relaxed. She explored the boat, found her a spot that had some good wind exposure, and the rest is history. She reminded me of those girls in the old Herbal Essence shampoo commercials – you know, the ones when they were washing their hair and waving their heads back and forth, shouting “Yes!” over and over? Yeah, that was Sophie on the boat. Eyes closed, head moving back and forth, enjoying the breeze on her face – sheer bliss. Check it out:

*DISCLAIMER: Sophie’s outside play time is always 100% supervised.

Then there’s Delilah – she has severe patella luxation (floating knee caps), so she has trouble getting around sometimes. She can run and jump and play, but when her knee cap slides out of place, we have to pop it back in for her and she has to take a rest. We do our best to limit her jumping, and we also give her a bone and joint supplement in her food. Anyway, just like Sophie, she is a perfect example of someone who does not let her “disability” limit her. Take a look at what she accomplished yesterday morning:

Why, you ask? I have no idea. How? Well, I’m not really sure of that either. I didn’t see it happen, I just heard some scratching and bumping and walked in to find her on top of our bedroom door, with Sampson looking on admiringly. She was sitting on top of the dresser (where Sampson is in the picture on the left) when I saw her before the jump/climb, so she must have leapt from there. Pure skill. Don’t worry, we didn’t let her jump down from there. When it looked like she was about to jump back down, Bobby grabbed her and set her on the floor.

Sampson, on the other hand, had a pretty low key weekend, which is unusual – he is usually the trouble maker. He did give me a hand while I was working though 😉 Such a sweetie.

I can only imagine what kinds of crazy things will happen this week… Until next time!
